Not just UK but US ATARIs. If you hated the capital letter/lower case letter
idea, then I do not see why you would allow this. At least letters are things
I use daily and I don't have to mess with making them capital or not, and in
EVERY country you hit the SHIFT to get a capital, and not to get lower.
Assuming ^+ is going to mean SHIFT CONTROL = on some keyboards and CONTROL +
on others is insane. It's much worse than using the NeXT standard of using
upper and lower case!

The reason for this is simple. The number keys have symbols above them,
so CONTROL-2 is sometimes more obvious on the number pad then on the other
keyboard. Many applications, especially IBM applications, use the word
ENTER and RETURN interchangeably, probably because the keyboards are labelled
that way! Some "RETURN" keys are labelled as "ENTER". Keeping these the
same is logical for users that use both systems. Also, if you just look
at the ascii value, they ARE the same (as aer numbers and everything on
the keypad).

I hate it. See above for ^? Its the same idea as ^+. And what about
italic? Why throw away the ATARI Compendium and the other guidelines
that already give specific meaning to ^I ??

Get out of your dream world. Not only is this impossible but look around you!
Look at the argumnents and all the differences of opinion. The only logical
thing to do is adapt the defaults of the other platforms and allow the user
to choose. What is so bad about the short-cut file? Why does it scare people?
Its a damn good idea, and I just proved you can't make the standard good
enough. I want the short-cut file. Try and satisfy THAT without a short-cut
file!! And making ^W for cycle window so you can make ^U close window
is lame. Other apps and the ATARI docs say ^W. Now Underline can't be ^U
and you want to change ^I away from italic?
You CAN'T please everyone, especially me.

Agreed.
